Happy Puppets
Visit Hakka Villages -
Hakka Puppet Show "Hakka Marriage by Coincident"
The Overture of Shan Puppet Theater -
After 1960, the traditional art was suppressed by the invention of televisions
and the flourishing of industries and business. Therefore, it was difficult
to preserve and enhance the traditional puppet theater or Hakka music
and opera. Even though some of the composers today would use Hakka folk
songs in their music, most of the classic Hakka folk songs have already
lost their original meanings. Wishing to preserve the tradition of both
Hakka culture and puppetry, Shan Puppet Theater combines the beauty
of Hakka music and the puppet performance in the project.
"Happy Puppets Visit Hakka Villages" - Hakka Puppets Show
"Hakka Marriage by Coincident" adapted the script "Marriage
by Coincident," which was created by Puppet Master Tien-lu Lee
of I-Wan-Jan Puppet Theater. The script was rewritten in Hakka language
by the director of Shan Puppet Theater, Wu-shan Huang, who is a pupil
of Master Lee for twenty years. The main purpose of this project is
to introduce a combination of traditional Hakka music and puppet performance
to elementary school students in Hakka villages. Using the active puppet
performance to attract younger generation's interests and appreciation
to Hakka culture and art. And by the interaction between audience, puppets
and puppeteers, a new environment is created for the traditional puppetry
in today's world.
